In the Shanhaijing, Fenghuang sings and dances by itself, and its appearance heralds peace. Later traditions made it an emblem of virtuous rule, harmony, marriage and auspicious sovereignty. Its core tradition is distinct from the Western phoenix's death-and-rebirth through fire.

Reading boundary: the Chinese Fenghuang tradition is not the Western phoenix cycle of death and rebirth by fire.
